Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor
Sildenafil Citrate 200mg is a selective PDE5 inhibitor and is the first oral ED medication for males. It improves alveolar growth in rat studies and prevents pulmonary hypertension in hyperoxia-induced lung injury.
Rat pups were exposed to normoxia and hyperoxia (95% FiO2), and they displayed reduced air spaces, decreased capillary density, and a decreased medial wall thickness. When compared to placebo, sildenafil preserved alveolar growth and decreased pulmonary vascular resistance in rat pups exposed to hyperoxia.
In a study involving breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 cells, sildenafil reduced cell proliferation, decreased tumor size, and inhibited tumor growth.
In addition, sildenafil increased the expression of HSP90, a protein involved in cancer cell proliferation and viability. As a result, sildenafil is a good candidate for preventing colon cancer.
It is a benzenesulfonamide
Sildenafil Citrate is a synthetic benzenesulfonamide derived from N-methyl piperazine. The organic solvents used for the synthesis of sildenafil are acetone, methanol, ethyl acetate, toluene, and dichloromethane. The organic solvents may be used up to 40 times the volume of the sildenafil base.
The adduct may be dried using methods known to one skilled in the art. The drying method may involve heat, vacuum, or a combination of both. Depending on the size of the sildenafil citrate sample, it can be dried in a range of 50 to 100deg C.
After drying, it may be separated as hydrate or as a benzenesulfonamide, whereas water content varies between 1.2% and 1.7% when measured using the Karl Fischer method.
It is not a cure for impotence
While there is no known erectile dysfunction cure, sildenafil has become an effective treatment for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Compared to placebo, sildenafil significantly improved erectile function and patient-recorded events in 11 double-blind, flexible-dose trials. However, the benefits of sildenafil are not uniform.

Patients with concomitant medications such as ACE inhibitors, b-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and HMG CoA reductase inhibitors were similarly low in the sildenafil group. The findings also showed that sildenafil was noninferential to placebo in the primary end-points of the study.
It is not a cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension
The 12-week trial of sildenafil citrate was a placebo-controlled, double-blind study. It involved 53 research centers. Patients were randomly assigned to four treatment groups: placebo, 20, 40, and 80 mg of sildenafil or placebo.
The randomization was stratified according to baseline walking distance and cause of pulmonary arterial hypertension. While sildenafil did not improve systemic blood pressure, it improved the symptoms of pulmonary arterial hypertension.
A recent study found that sildenafil reduced pulmonary hypertension and improved exercise tolerance in subjects with pulmonary hypertension. Furthermore, the drug was also found to reduce the risk of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension.
However, the benefits of sildenafil may outweigh the risks. While sildenafil is not a cure for pulmonary arterial hypertension, it has a potential to treat hypoxic pulmonary hypertension.
